Why was the Cesky Terrier created?

A Czech geneticist set out, around the middle of the last century, to design a better working terrier by blending Sealyham blood with Scottish Terrier blood. His goals were practical: a dog able to hunt alongside others, squeeze into tighter burrows than its parents could, and then settle more calmly indoors. It is now a national treasure.

Daily life and workload

The Cesky Terrier suits terrier lovers who want the calm, pack bred version: a silky coated Czech original with a gentleman's temperament. Bold, scrappy and cheerful in the record's formula, friendly with strangers, better with older children, and dog social with early work, it rates flats as well suited in the record with exercise genuinely delivered.

Owners who do well with this breed tend to share one habit: they planned the dog's day as deliberately as their own, and the dog repaid the planning with an easy temperament.

The breed behind the question

The temperament record reads: Bold, scrappy, cheerful and full of self belief. With energy at 3 out of 5, neither couch dog nor athlete, the Cesky Terrier fits owners whose routine already holds an hour or so outdoors.

For scale: the Cesky Terrier stands 10 to 13 inches and weighs 13 to 23 lb, counts as a senior from about 10 years, and needs 45 to 90 minutes of exercise daily. Keep those numbers in mind and the rest of the page falls into place.

The growth record behind the breed: a Cesky Terrier puppy weighs 8 weeks at about 2 to 4 lb, 6 months at about 8 to 13 lb, 9 months at about 10 to 18 lb, on the way to 13 to 23 lb fully grown at 10 to 13 inches. The breed belongs to the Terrier group and its home ground is The Czech Republic.

The honest bottom line

The stranger test summarises the social side: rated Friendly with strangers, the Cesky Terrier meets the world as this page describes. Owners who accept the terms upfront call the Cesky Terrier easy; owners who discover them call the same numbers a burden. Everything behind these answers, from growth tables to the health list, is laid out on the full Cesky Terrier breed profile.

Every answer on this page traces back to the breed's record: the same size, temperament, exercise and health facts set out in full on the Cesky Terrier profile, linked below.

How active is a Cesky Terrier around the house?

Energy at 3/5 predicts it: high scorers patrol and participate, low scorers supervise from a cushion. Around the house the Cesky Terrier also needs its 45 to 90 outdoor minutes regardless of indoor tempo. The full record behind these answers sits on the Cesky Terrier profile, including the growth and health tables.

Is the Cesky Terrier a healthy breed overall?

Its record lists the usual conditions honestly, and its 12 to 15 year lifespan is the summary statistic. Screened breeding and lean keeping move an individual Cesky Terrier toward the good end of its own record. Every breed average hides individuals; breeders and rescues who know their dogs can tell you where a specific dog sits.

Can a Cesky Terrier live with cats and small pets?

It depends on the dog's prey drive and upbringing more than on the breed label. The Cesky Terrier's record with dogs reads With early socialization; cats it is raised with are usually accepted, while strange small animals outdoors are a different question for most dogs.
