Breed quiz: which dog fits your life

Short answer: answer the 11 questions below and this quiz scores all 469 breed profiles against your home, time, family and budget, then shows your top 8 matches first. Every match shows its percent, its estimated monthly cost, why it fits and what to watch for, so you can judge the result instead of just trusting it.

Your matches will appear here. Every result shows its match percent, its estimated monthly cost, why it fits and what to watch for.

How scoring works

Every question is scored from 0 to 10 against one part of each breed profile, and the 11 scores are added together and shown as a percentage. Nothing is hidden: the same ratings you see on a breed profile are the ratings used here. The breed profiles follow the standards of the AKC, The Kennel Club and the FCI, and our methodology page explains how we check and source them.

The quiz is a starting shortlist, not a verdict. It compares typical breed traits with the life you described; it cannot judge an individual dog, your exact home, or how much training and help you will have. Use your results to read full profiles, then meet real dogs before you decide.

Ratings come from the breed profiles on this site, which follow AKC, Kennel Club and FCI standards. Cost figures are planning estimates from the formulas above, not quotes. See how we verify for sources.

Breed quiz questions

How does the breed quiz score work?

Each of your 11 answers is scored from 0 to 10 against the matching field in every breed profile, such as exercise minutes, shedding rating, trainability and apartment suitability. The 11 scores are added up, and the total is shown as a percentage. The 8 breeds with the highest totals are shown first, with ties broken alphabetically, and every result shows its three strongest fits and any weak spots scoring below 9.

What if my top match is a breed I cannot find locally?

That is common, and it does not make the result useless. Shelters and breed rescues exist for most breeds, and waiting lists are normal for responsible breeders. Treat the profile as a fit check rather than a shopping list: if the breed fits your home, time and budget on paper, it is worth looking further afield or waiting. If it does not fit, a closer match further down your list is the better dog for you.

Can a quiz choose my dog for me?

No. A quiz can shortlist breeds whose typical needs line up with your life, but it cannot meet an individual dog, and individual dogs vary. Use the shortlist as a starting point, then meet dogs in person, talk to breeders and rescues, ask about health testing and temperament, and take your time before you decide.
