Can dogs eat it?

This section answers the question every dog owner types at the kitchen counter: can my dog eat this? Food safety answers carry real consequences, so we are building this section to a higher standard than the rest of the site.

Please read this first

This section is general information drawn from the published guidance of the organisations named below. It is not veterinary advice, and it does not replace your own veterinarian, who knows your dog. If your dog has eaten something toxic, contact your veterinarian, the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center on (888) 426-4435, or the Pet Poison Helpline on (855) 764-7661 straight away. A consultation fee may apply on the helplines.

Now live: our Can Dogs Eat guides are built on the sources method. Most verdicts in this section were checked against at least two authoritative sources, the ASPCA, the Merck Veterinary Manual, the FDA, the Pet Poison Helpline and the American Kennel Club, and every guide names its sources. A small number of pages rest on a single organisation, because no second organisation on that list publishes guidance naming the food, and those pages say so in their source note. The sources are the authority: the guidance is theirs, cited and linked, and no reviewer is claimed.

Every food page carries the same complete structure: a clear verdict, safe portion guidance where the sources give it, preparation rules, and the warning signs that mean call a vet now.

The one rule that never waits

If your dog has eaten chocolate, grapes or raisins, xylitol (also listed as birch sugar), onions, garlic, macadamia nuts, cooked bones or anything you are unsure about, call your veterinarian or an animal poison line now rather than searching the web. Minutes matter with several of these.
