Who created the Lucas Terrier?

Major Sir Jocelyn Lucas developed this terrier during the 1940s. Known as an authority on Sealyham Terriers, he aimed to produce a working terrier that was smaller and nimbler than the Sealyham. He mated his own Sealyhams to Norfolk Terriers to achieve that goal. The resulting Lucas breed continues today under the care of its dedicated breed club.

The honest bottom line

Priorities are socialisation, a settle, recall proofed carefully around vermin sized distractions, housetraining consistency, and grooming and dental cooperation. Lucas Terriers are bright, willing pupils for terriers, learning household skills and tricks readily under kind, consistent, reward based training in short sessions. Terriers suit people who laugh first and manage second, with consistent rules underneath, per the overview, which is the whole Lucas method.

Every answer on this page traces back to the breed's record: the same size, temperament, exercise and health facts set out in full on the Lucas Terrier profile, linked below.

Daily life and workload

The temperament record reads: Confident, funny, determined and loyal. With energy at 4 out of 5, an unexercised Lucas Terrier invents its own work; the official bill is 45 to 90 minutes, every single day.

One more anchor from the record: with strangers the breed reads Friendly with strangers, and with other dogs, With early socialization; both verdicts colour the answers on this page.

For the record's growth table: the Lucas Terrier passes 8 weeks at about 2 to 3 lb, 4 months at about 5 to 8 lb, 12 months at about 13 to 18 lb, and tops out at 14 to 20 lb and 9.0 to 12 inches. Standard colors: tan or combinations of tan, white, black, or badger. In the record's grouping the Lucas Terrier is a Terrier breed, and its home ground is England.

The breed behind the question

Insurance at $29 to $54 a month is the Lucas Terrier's risk priced by professionals, an outside opinion worth weighing. Households should choose with that dog, not an imagined one, in mind, and the Lucas Terrier profile shows the real animal in full. The full Lucas Terrier profile carries the complete record: health screening, life stages, growth and the questions owners ask next.

If this question is part of choosing the breed, run it against your worst week rather than your best: the exercise in the rain, the grooming in a busy month, the dog care during a family illness.

How much grooming does a Lucas Terrier need?

The record scores grooming effort at 3/5 and shedding at 4/5 for the fairly harsh coat. The coat question pages for the Lucas Terrier break the routine down week by week; the grooming planner turns it into a schedule. The full record behind these answers sits on the Lucas Terrier profile, including the growth and health tables.

What health problems is the Lucas Terrier known for?

Every breed carries a short list of conditions it sees more often than average, and the Lucas Terrier, living 12 to 14 years, is no exception. The profile's health record names them with notes; screening breeding stock for those conditions is the buyer's strongest protection. Every breed average hides individuals; breeders and rescues who know their dogs can tell you where a specific dog sits.

How active is a Lucas Terrier around the house?

Energy at 4/5 predicts it: high scorers patrol and participate, low scorers supervise from a cushion. Around the house the Lucas Terrier also needs its 45 to 90 outdoor minutes regardless of indoor tempo.
