When senior status starts for your dog's size, which life stage they are in today, and their human years.
| Size class | Senior stage begins |
|---|---|
| Toy | From about 10 years |
| Small | From about 10 years |
| Medium | From about 8 years |
| Large | From about 7 years |
| Giant | From about 5 to 6 years |
Size sets the clock. Big dogs mature fast, age fast and wear out sooner; small dogs mature quickly too, then settle into a long, slow middle age. That is why a seven year old giant breed can be a genuine senior while a seven year old toy breed is mid adult. The thresholds above are the same ones printed in the growth tables on our breed profiles, and the calculator applies them by your dog's size class, whether that size came from the breed you picked or the size you chose by hand.
Once a dog crosses into the senior stage, most vets move from yearly checkups to a twice yearly rhythm, with weight, teeth, joints and bloodwork watched more closely. Nothing about that is alarming: it is how small changes get caught while they are still cheap and kind to fix. Keep exercise daily but gentler, keep weight lean, because extra pounds press hardest on old joints, and keep the mind busy with sniffing games and short training refreshers. Our senior dogs section covers the rhythm, mobility, teeth and comfort care in full. This calculator is general information about life stages, not a health assessment; your vet knows your dog's actual condition.
Dogs race through the early years: the first year counts as about 15 human years and the second adds about 9 more, reaching 24. After that, each year adds a size dependent amount, 4 per year for toy and small dogs, 5 for medium, 6 for large and 7 for giant, which is the size aware method used in veterinary guidance rather than the old multiply by seven myth.

It depends on size, because size sets the pace of ageing. Toy and small dogs count as seniors from about 10 years, medium dogs from about 8 years, large dogs from about 7 years, and giant breeds from about 5 to 6 years. The calculator above applies the threshold for your dog's size class and shows which life stage they are in now.
Generally, yes. On our breed profiles, the lifespan ranges in the standards typically run longer for smaller breeds and shorter for giant breeds, which is why the senior threshold arrives years earlier for a giant dog. It is a pattern across breeds, not a guarantee for any individual dog: weight control, dental care and screening influence how much of the range a dog gets to use.
